Merry and Secure: Tips for protecting your commercial premises

December 20, 2023

With the countdown to Christmas well and truly underway, it’s time to check that you have all of the preparations in place for keeping your site safe during the Christmas period.

Taking proactive measures can ensure the safety and aesthetics of your landscape and minimise disruption when everyone returns to your commercial site.

Here are a few landscaping suggestions to assist you in getting ready for the weeks ahead and minimising the chances of encountering unforeseen issues when you get back.

Severe Weather Preparation

Stay informed about weather conditions and try to anticipate any upcoming severe weather events.  When severe weather is predicted, try to take proactive measures, such as pruning or securing vulnerable trees. If high winds are predicted, remove or secure loose objects, such as potted plants, signage, or outdoor furniture. It is a good idea to check drainage systems are clear of any debris to prevent water buildup and flooding during heavy rains.

Outdoor Lighting

Inspect the outdoor lighting on your property to ensure that it is functioning properly and providing sufficient light, particularly during the darker winter evenings. Well-lit spaces enhance visibility and discourage potential security risks. If festive lighting is in place, make sure it is securely installed to prevent any safety hazards.

Leaf Clearance

Before freezing conditions set in, trim dead or overhanging branches and remove any debris that could become hazardous when frozen. It is important to clear fallen leaves, especially from pathways and high-traffic areas. Wet leaves can become slippery and hazardous when frozen. Do you have a sufficient supply of sand or salt to use on pathways to reduce the risk of slips and falls?

Plant Protection

Cover vulnerable plants to protect them from freezing temperatures. This is particularly important for plants that are sensitive to cold. Applying a layer of mulch around plants will provide insulation and protect the roots from freezing conditions.

Emergency Contacts

Compile a list of emergency contacts in the event of severe weather conditions or damage to your site. Make sure this information is easily accessible to all team members and they are familiar with their role in the event of an emergency.
